NetTalk–Unlimited FREE calls to USA/Canada and FREE conference calls [Video Review]

Not too long ago, we explored how to make unlimited free calls to USA and Canada using iCall. While iCall is a great app, it is only available for the iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad). Today, we look at another mobile VoIP (mVoIP) option that seeks to provide unlimited free calls to USA and Canada, and is available for almost all major mobile platforms – NetTalk.

NetTALK is a publicly traded company offering low cost VoIP services. The company’s flagship product, netTALK DUO, is a MagicJack competitor. Unlike MagicJack, netTalk DUO directly connects with your Internet connection and thus eliminates the need to have a computer running to access VoIP.

While the DUO is a great option, it is not the focus of this article. netTALK also has introduced smart phone app that offers FREE calls to USA and Canada. More importantly, netTALK has most mobile platforms covered (the Symbian platform is conspicuously missing) – download links below.

netTALK Key Features:

netTALK provides two key features:

  1. Unlimited FREE calls to USA and Canada: This is the primary offering and netTALK would surely be hoping to generate some excitement due to this. You can record your phone conversations. Unlike WhistlePhone, which also provides unlimited free calls to USA and Canada, netTALK does not provide a regular phone number (DID) to allow incoming calls. Also, netTALK does not provide SIP support. The following video provides an overview of the app.
  2. FREE conference calling bridge: Another useful feature that netTALK provides is the ability to make free conference calls. From the app, just dial CONF (2663) to create your own conference room. Just circulate the conference room number to other participants for them to join. The conference facility is very basic (i.e., no passwords, call recording, etc.), but it works very well for a FREE facility.

Admittedly, the netTALK app provides very basic services, but for a FREE app there is nothing to complaint. The app itself is easy to use and fairly stable. The call quality is also good. Overall, I feel netTALK is a great alternative to some of the other apps providing similar functionality. What distinguishes this app from the others is the ability to have FREE conference calls and the wide variety of mobile platforms on which it is available.

Share your experience about netTalk or any other app that you are using to make FREE calls…
